Soapnuts - these look really promising, from a washing perspective. They're actually seed pods, from trees in India, so no worries if you have a nut allergy. They produce a soapy lather when you put them in with your washing, you can use them up to five times before they'll stop working, and when they've got fed up scraping the grime out of your socks, you can boil them up with a little bit of water until they turn into a pasty mix, and use it as shampoo or hand wash!
