13th February - Glen Torridon

The Route > UK > 2009

So, bright and early we were up and about and left Gairloch campsite while there was still morning dew on the ground. Or maybe it was more like 1pm. Either way, we left eventually and continued our journey south :-)

The plan for the day was to initially head inland (it's the only road there is, so not much choice really!) along the banks of Loch Maree, hang a right at Kinlochewe, drive through the Beinn Eighe region and Glen Torridon, follow a coast road around the southern shores of Loch Torridon and then finally go south again with the wide open expanse of sea to our right, ending up at a little village called Applecross in time for tea. Mmmmhmmmmm. In fairness, we didn't do too badly by our usual standards - we managed to park up before dark in a quiet little spot about 10miles before Applecross, having stopped to take lots of photo's as well as generally feeling pretty damn tired after the night before.

The real spectacular bit of the route was once we got off the A896 just after Sheildaig. The bit beforehand is pretty special, and we stopped for lunch and a bit of a break at the foot of Beinn Eighe, which at 972m high has the ability to make you feel pretty insignificant. But the unclassified road that came after this really stood out for both of us, mostly as we both had an almost identical thought about it - it'd be a perfect road for a Caterham! :-) A special little car very close to Jasons heart, I don't think there's even a possibility that he won't be back at some point to do this road again in something a little more nippy and 'in touch' with the outside world. Maybe we'll come this way on our way back to Bettyhill to buy that house by the sea and set up a dive school :-)

Having had our fair share of windy pitches in the last couple of weeks, we were a little dubious about where we decided to stop. There wasn't any wind at the time, but we knew from our experience at the Stoer lighthouse that that wasnt anything to go by! But it was a pretty desolate expanse and Moglet needs a fair sized space to pull over in and be out of the way, so we couldn't get too picky. As expected, the wind picked up once we were in bed, but nothing too much to worry about, which was a relief.

Next morning, after a pretty decent nights kip, we were on the road and heading towards Applecross, better late than never...
